Humanising AI at the IPS Pro-Audio Show 2023

With an expert panel dedicated to the development of AI in the creative audio industry, the IPS Pro-Audio Show 2023 is giving artificial intelligence a human face.

The Institute of Professional Sound (IPS) is aiming to humanise the impact of AI at the IPS Pro-Audio Show 2023 on Saturday 14 October with an open Q&A session in the company of three leading AI tech experts.

Concluding the seminar sessions at this year’s event at Greenford Hall in west London, “The future, NOW!” invites BBC R&D’s Chris Baume, David Ronan of AI mixing and mastering start-up RoEx and freelance producer Tyronne Hannick to discuss AI’s influence on the creative audio industry. The heavy hitting panel will open up the floor to discuss how we are already benefitting from AI and where the technology might go next.

“While considerations like consumer rights, data protection and copyright all need to be addressed, technology has always empowered the creative process,” says Hannick. “Fundamentally, the debate around the future of AI is about ownership, ethics, and business pressures; there are parallels we can draw with previous technological advances and lessons we can leverage, but we shouldn’t judge AI in an isolated way.

“AI still needs people who know how to use it; when it comes to creative development and production, AI is a tool and not an author.”

Roex CEO Ronan adds: “You still have to trust your ears and there is still a trade-off between efficiency and the creative elements of music production. AI is not a replacement for human craft, but it can take care of the heavy lifting to provide more time for creativity. What we have done with AI at RoEx is democratise the creation of audio by providing a solid foundation to build on.”

Other free Q&A sessions feature Production Sound Mixer Stuart Piggott, who reveals how he adapted DANTE to capture the audio on Apple TV+’s real-time drama “Hijack” in an extremely hostile RF environment. Filmed as live on a full-size plane set, Piggott lifts the lid on how he split the entire set into individual zones to guarantee radio mic coverage using a custom-designed DANTE cart.

Meanwhile, Baume returns to take attendees on journey through a decade of ground-breaking audio research at the BBC and asks how it might affect audio production over next ten years. As Lead Research Engineer at BBC R&D, Baum has helped deliver immersive and personalised audio experiences with the development of innovative technologies like the EAR Production Suite, Audio Orchestrator and Narrative Importance, as well as playing a pivotal role in the EU-funded ORPHEUS project on object-based audio.

Following a very successful event in 2022, the IPS Pro-Audio Show 2023 is the only event in the UK totally dedicated to sound professionals, and free to attend. With over 30 international exhibitors representing more than 70 brands, and UK debuts of a number of technology products, the one-day event caters for everybody with a passion for professional sound.
